Alturas is located on the Pit River, east of the center of Modoc County. The tall Warner Mountains lie to the east, the wetlands and wild rice fields of South Fork Valley to the south, and the extensive Modoc Plateau to the north. Nearby Modoc National Forest offers the outdoor enthusiast an abundance of recreational opportunities including fishing, hiking, hunting, and skiing. A bird watcher’s paradise, the Modoc National Wildlife Refuge is an important resting and feeding area for waterfowl and more than 240 bird species, as well as a wide range of other wildlife such as Mule deer, Pronghorn antelope, bobcats, coyote and more. If history is more your thing, the Modoc County Historical Museum has created a walking tour featuring historic buildings and homes that were built between 1872 and 1938.
